Kyphosis (Hunchback Spine)

Kyphosis is an excessive forward rounding of the upper spine, giving a rounded or 'hunched' appearance, and leading to stiffness, back pain, and muscle fatigue.

Kyphosis (Hunchback Spine)

Kyphosis is a spinal condition in which the upper back curves forward more than normal, giving a rounded or “hunched” appearance. While a mild curve may simply affect posture, a severe kyphosis can cause pain, fatigue, breathing difficulty, and problems with daily activities if left untreated.

The spine normally has gentle natural curves that help balance the body. In kyphosis, this curve becomes exaggerated, affecting body alignment and, in some cases, nerve function.

Kyphosis often develops gradually and may be mistaken for poor posture, especially in children and teenagers.

Watch for:

  • Rounded upper back or visible hump
  • Shoulders leaning forward
  • Uneven posture while standing
  • Back stiffness
  • Fatigue after sitting or standing long
  • Back pain (in some cases)
  • Difficulty standing straight
  • Severe cases: breathing discomfort or reduced stamina

Parents frequently notice that the child cannot stand fully straight even when asked to “correct posture.” This is an important warning sign.
